The major sports events in the area take place at the Richmond Coliseum, The Diamond or the Richmond International Speedway. College sports have their own venues, however basketball is such a popularpastime that many games are scheduled for the Coliseum. Strawberry Hill hosts occasional horse shows and the only professional pari-mutuel racetrack in the state is located at Colonial Downs.

Richmonds own arena football team, the Bandits are affiliated with the American Indoor Football League and play their home games in the “Hideout”, aka Richmond Coliseum. The season runs from February through June each year.

Richmond Coliseum - The city owned Richmond Coliseum showcases not only local sports but special programs such as regional and national tournaments, ice skating and gymnastic performances, rodeos and an occasional monster truck rally. Richmond International Raceway - Annually drawing the largest crowds to a sporting event in Virginia, the Richmond International Raceway is a state-of-the-art 3/4 mile track and seats 100,000+ fans. It’s the fast-pass and score on ice, the Richmond Riverdogs are members of the cool East Coast Hockey League where their electric game is part of the local sport fan’s winter action.

Collegiate Sports

On-going for over 100 years, it’s one of the oldest football rivalries in the country - the University of Richmond Spiders yearly, takes on the Tribe of William & Mary. Football is a Saturday feature at U of R in the fall. The school also boasts a basketball team as well as a myriad of other competitive sports.

Virginia Commonwealth University / The Fan / (804) 289-8388 / $. Located in the heart of the city, there is no room for a football field, but the Rams (lady’s and gents) can strut their stuff in basketball. Both the men’s and women’s teams have made the NCAA playoffs in
the past and are very competitive in their play. Some games are played at the Richmond Coliseum.

Also located near the heart of the city, this premier black university hosts some great basketball. Their home games are played at the the Arthur Ashe Center and on occasion
at the Richmond Coliseum. Football is another popular pastime at Virginia Union. The Panthers play their local games on campus at Hovey Field.
