If golf is the name of your favorite pastime, then Richmond has it and then some! With choices that range from superb golfing challenges to a more user friendly game amongst beautiful rolling hills, the play and difficulty can be selected to whatever suits your game. The variety of course layouts are far reaching in Virginia’s Piedmont, where Richmond sits like a star in the center of a golfing universe. Here are a few of the public, resort and semi-private clubs within a 45 minute drive of the city center.

Chesterfield and Prince George Counties and clubs south

15 Bermuda Golf Course If your are looking for a quick game, Bermuda’s nine hole Chesterfield County course may be just right for you. (804) 530-3800

9 Birkdale Golf Course Opened in 1990, Birkdale championship course was designed by Dan Maples for the premium shotmaker, yet it will challenge the skills of players of every level. Birkdale is considered one of the best layouts in the area. Tee-time reservations required. (804) 739-8800

12 First Tee Chesterfield One of two 2000 entries for golf in the Richmond area, this Lester George course offers a great par 66, learning-oriented layout that sits just inside the city line boundary from Chesterfield County. (804) 275-8050

13 The Highlands Golfers' Club As the name implies, HIghlands is a real Golfers' Club. Relatively new, built in 1995, this championship course offers tournament and outing packages. Tee-time reservations required. (804) 796-4800

8 Independence Golf Club A classic in the making, this Chesterfield-Powhatan course is under construction and is due to open in the fall of 2001. Designed by Tom Fazio, the Virginia State Golf Association has christened this to be the new “statewide home of golf”. Watch for this 7,100 yard course to open with great fanfare! 16 Jordan Point Country Club Located just south of Hopewell on the James River, Jordan Point is a par 72 with some great views, varied terrain, as well as challenging play and is ranked among the area’s best.

10 Lake Chesdin Golfers' Club One of the newer additions to the local golfing scene, Lake Chesdin opened in June of 1999. Designed by Barton Tuck, the course is a challenging par 72 carved out of the deep woods of North Chesterfield with beautiful views of Lake Chesdin. (804) 590-0031

14 River’s Bend Country Club Currently semi-private and opened to the public, River’s Bends beautiful par 71 Championship course hugs the James River just below historic Dutch Gap. Designed by Steve Smyers, the course features one of the most challenging finishing holes in the state and has become one of the favorites of Richmond golfers.Tee-time reservations required. Henrico County and clubs north

4 Belmont Park Golf Course Once Belmont Park played host to a major championship in the 40s, and is now a municipal course that still has a lot of spirit. Belmont has one of the best starting holes in the region according to local pros. Tee-time reservations required. (804) 501-4653

5 The Crossings at Virginia Center
Rated as one of the best municipal courses in the state, the Crossings first class championship course has a demanding layout and a reputation for being in excellent condition and is also the best bargain in town! A driving range and putting greens, along with a PGA pro on staff may be what you need to get your game on track. Tee-time reservations are required. (804) 266-2254

17 Glenwood Golf Club The closest game in town on Creighton Road, Fred Findlay designed Glenwoods 18 hole, par 71 championship course. Tee-time reservations are required. (804) 226-1793
3 The Hollows Golf Club This semi-private, 18 hole championship course in Hanover County offers seniors and women discounts on ladies’ day. You’re welcome to walk the course while you play, for some great exercise! (804) 798-2949

6 Hunting Hawk A new course is in the making, opened during the fall of 2000. Designed by W. R. Love, Hunting Hawk’s 18-hole layout has been sculpted into the landscape to enhance the environment as well as providing many alternatives to play each hole. (804) 749-1900

Goochland and clubs west

11 Mill Quarter Plantation Country Club Located in Powhatan County on Mill Quarter Drive, a top-ten state ranking makes Mill Quarter’s Edmond Ault designed championship course a challenge for all who play the game. Tee-time reservations required. (804) 598-4221

1 Royal Virginia Golf Club
- This relatively new course in Hadensville already has a reputation! To quote a state-wide golf publication; ”Doglegs make this one a bear”! Take the club dare and give it your best shot! Tee-time reservations are recommended. (804) 457-2041

2 Sycamore Creek Golf Course - Strategically placed hazards, yawning sand bunkers and sculptured fairways amongst the rolling hills are just as advertised! Tee-time reservations on this par 70 are required. (804) 784-3544

7 Windy Hill - Looking to improve your game, but don’t have the time to play 18? Then try Windy Hill, a nine hole, par 35 situated close by in the Midlothian area. (804) 794-7193

Quinton, New Kent and clubs east

23 The Golf Club at Brickshire – 11010 Kentland Trail / Providence Forge / 866 -758-6845
The newest addition to the Williamsburg golf scene, designed by Tom Clark in association with two-time U.S. Open Champion Curtis Strange, the course emulates some the greatest holes in golf including August #3, Riviera #10, Pinehurst #11 and St. Andrews #14.

19 Brookwoods - A local hot spot in Quinton, this par 72, is a fun championship course and considered one of the area’s best values. Conveniently located just off I-64 east, tee-times at Brookwoods are requested in advance. (804) 932-3737

22 The Colonial Golf Course - Golf Digest claims it as a “top ten Virginia public course”, and it has been ranked by other sources as number 2 in Virginia. Open year-round, Colonial’s 18 hole, par-72 course is a traditional wooded layout featuring five boxed tees, offering a “fair but challenging experience” for all.

- Only 5 minutes from Richmond’s airport, Highland Springs brings Florida-style golf to central Virginia. Designed by Michael Hurzdan, the course permits walking anytime.

The Tradition at Royal New Kent
- Modeled after Northern Ireland’s Royal County Down, this New Kent County course is unlike any other layout in the region. As one of the most challenging courses, Royal New Kent has been singled out for its superb greens, starting holes, course design and difficulty, and the list goes on. 20 The Tradition at Stonehouse- Opening a year earlier than the Royal New Kent (1996), this legendary sibling also garnered the title of the Best New Course of the Year!
